James E. Chandler Sr. Obituary
James E. Chandler, Sr.

Following a long and courageous battle with cancer, Jim passed away peacefully at his home on June 14, 2016. He was comforted and supported by his loving family and the caring staff at Rockland Place during his long illness and at the time of his passing.

Jim was predeceased by his parents and brother in the 1990's, his wife, Helen in 2013, and his younger son, Douglas in 2008. He now can be with them again. He is survived by his son, James, Jr. and his wife Janice, four grandchildren: Neil James Chandler and wife Adele, Jennifer Chandler Lamb and husband Timothy, Jill Chandler Shelnut and husband Christopher, and Jamie Chandler, plus seven great grandchildren.

Jim was born in 1927 at Waynesboro, PA and spent most of his life in Delaware. After high school he studied architecture and did a short tour of duty in the U.S. Navy. He then married Helen, his high school sweetheart and began his family and long career with the duPont Company.

His many interests included his family, sports, gardening, travel, music, good books and magazines, and art. Jim and Helen played golf and danced at the duPont Country Club and took art lessons in the U.S. and France. They became very accomplished artists. Jim focused his talents on oil painting and pen-and-ink drawings. When he retired from duPont, Jim built a few museum-quality models of naval sailing ships and whaling ships, one of which is featured in the 2016 calendar published by Watermark Communities.

He and Helen particularly enjoyed their second home near Rehoboth Beach. Family, friends, and neighbors came often to visit them. Many bushels of crabs were consumed there - and also at their Wilmington residence.

A service to celebrate Jim's life will be held at Limestone Presbyterian Church, 3201 Limestone Rd. Wilmington, 19808 on Sunday, June 26th, beginning at 1:00 p.m and followed by refreshments at the church. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers please contribute to Delaware Hospice or the .
