James P. Noonan Obituary
James P. Noonan

AGE: 60 • Wilmington

James P. Noonan, 60, set sail for paradise on July 24, 2017.

Jim was born on May 17, 1957 in St. Francis Hospital and grew up in the community of Shipley Heights in Brandywine Hundred. He attended Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Salesianum and Brandywine highs and Delaware Tech.

Jim spent his summers in Dewey Beach and Fenwick Island and he was an expert and avid sailor, an art he learned from his father, Charles Noonan, aboard the family's Lightning sailboat on Rehoboth Bay. Jim owned several yachts over the years and took part in blue water passages from Lewes to the Caribbean Sea islands, and at different times he docked his boats in Rehoboth Bay, Little Assawoman Bay, Delaware Bay and Chesapeake Bay, where his latest boat, Awareness, was moored.

Jim was also an expert skier, on land and on water, and he spent a year in Winter Park, Colorado, where he would ski to work as a sous chef at a local restaurant. Jim worked in the printing and paper industries for most of his career, most recently with Associates International, Inc., and the family is grateful for the patience, understanding and compassion the company showed Jim during his bouts with cancer.

Jim was an ardent reader who was proud of his extensive library. He was also an enthusiastic, albeit inconsistent golfer who never let a bad round dampen his love for the game or his enjoyment of the 19th hole. He was also a master chef and no family Super Bowl party was complete without his crab fritters and special dipping sauce. Jim had many interests, but his greatest pleasure came from being with and caring for his family and friends.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Peggy Noonan, and his beloved wife, Joan Cooper Noonan. He is survived by his step-sons, Brent and Kyle Stevens, and two grandchildren, Cooper and Violet Stevens.

Jim is also survived by his siblings and their spouses: Mary and Dick Stewart, Ann and Charles Cozamanis, Charles "Mike" Noonan Jr., and Kevin and Suzi Noonan. Jim was undisputedly everyone's favorite uncle, and also left to cherish his memory are his nephews and nieces: Rick Stewart, Jimmy Stewart, Kevin Stewart, Steven Stewart, Meaghan Davidson, Christy Willard, Amy Shikiar, Meggie Mack and Tim Noonan.

Jim will also be greatly missed by close friends Mark and Kay McMahon, Steve and Tammy Judge, Rick and Louanne Judge, Glenn "Murph" and JoAnn Merhige, Tim Frith and Kathy Legg and Mickey and Patricia Scott, as well as the dozens of people he met and influenced during his lifetime.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Weldin and Shipley Roads, in Liftwood, Del., on Saturday, July 29 at 10:30 a.m. Friends are invited to a visitation before the Mass, starting at 9:30 a.m. Interment at Cathedral Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Jim's name be made to Hospice Delaware, 16 Polly Drummond Center, Newark, DE 19711.
