Jeraldine S. Trabant Obituary
Jeraldine S. Trabant

AGE: 92 • Hockessin

Jeraldine Merlyn Shanessy Trabant, age 92, died on May 2, 2016. When Jerry was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1923, according to family lore there had never been a caesarian birth where both mother and child survived; however, Jerry and her mother, Julia Shanessy, thrived. Jerry's father, James Colmar Shanessy, was president of the barbers union and a lifelong labor leader.

Jerry attended Shortridge High in Indianapolis and graduated from Huntington Park High School in California. She had already met and was dating her future husband when she went on to Occidental College. Marriage to E. Arthur Trabant followed on October 24, 1943 and she graduated from The University of Southern California with a major in History. 1946 found Jerry and Art in West Lafayette, Indiana, with their one year old daughter, Jeraldine Merlyn Trabant, Jr. and Art, as a math instructor at Purdue. A second daughter Arta Marlyn Trabant was born in West Lafayette on February 28, 1950.

In 1966 they ventured to The Georgia Institute of Technology. Shortly thereafter in 1968, Art accepted the presidency of the U of D and the family came to Delaware. A third daughter, Amanda Merle joined the family on December 30, 1969.

Not only a dedicated new mother to Amanda, Jerry also tirelessly worked alongside Art for the betterment of the University, the students and all stakeholders of the institution. In May of 1980, Jerry received a Master's of Science degree from the University of Delaware and began a career in marriage and family counseling at the Newark Family Counseling Center, which she enjoyed until retirement. Jerry was also active in organizations ranging from League of Women Voters, the Girl Scouts, Planned Parenthood, the Battered Women's Center of Delaware and the New Castle County YWCA.

In May of 2005 Jerry accepted an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Delaware.

A lifetime of love and dedication earned them retirement and led them to Fairthorn, Wilmington and finally Cokesbury. Jerry lost her lifelong companion and soulmate, Art, in July 2012. Her middle daughter, Arta Trabant, sadly passed in December 2015. She is survived by two daughters Jeri Trabant and husband Keith A. Wallace, Amanda Trabant and husband Enrique Alcor. With a life so full of passion, conviction and dedication we are honored to welcome those that would share memories and celebrate the life of a truly remarkable woman on Friday May 6, 2016 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME 7230 Lancaster Pike Hockessin, DE 19707.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to University of Delaware, Office of Development and Alumni Relations, 83 East Main St., Third Floor, Newark, DE 19716, or may be made by phone at 302-831-2104.
