AGE: 77 • Wilmington

On Friday, June 9, 2017, Jerome H. Pinkett went home to be with the Lord. Born and raised in Buttonwood, New Castle, DE, he was a member of Buttonwood U.M. Church where he served in many offices, including Trustee and Chair of the Finance Committee. Professionally, Jerome had been a teacher/guidance counselor at Howard H.S. (1963-69), P.S. duPont H.S.(1969-78), and, later, Mt. Pleasant H.S.(1978-92), where he retired in 1992.

Jerome was an outstanding athlete. He played baseball for the Optimist Little League of Wilmington in its inaugural season; played football, basketball, baseball and ran track at Wm. Penn H.S., where he was also intramural wrestling champion; lettered in four sports and held the long jump record for longest jump (23 ft., 5 in.) for more than 20 years; was named football MVP and Outstanding athlete in the class of 1957; and was Co-Captain (Gold team) for the 2nd annual Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game (1957).

Jerome earned the Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Business Education, from Delaware State College (University) in 1961, where he served as Junior class Vice President, Senior Class President, became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and lettered in football and baseball for four years. He was later inducted into the Delaware State University Hall of Fame (1997) for both sports. He was also inducted into the Delaware Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame (2009) for football.

He went on to earn the Master's degree in Student Personnel Services from Glassboro State (Rowan) University and an additional forty-five credits from U of DE, and Rider University.

For more than 50 years, Jerome prepared income taxes, starting with Mr. Joseph Morris in the 1960s.

Jerome was active in his Marshallton community and loved attending his children's and grandchildren's activities. He coached the Marshallton Cub baseball team, where all of his children played, including his daughter.

Jerome is predeceased by: his parents, Leona Black Pinkett and Joseph H. Pinkett, Sr.; brothers, Tyrone J. and Richard Pinkett; granddaughter, Risha D. Walker; and sister-in-law Ruth Pinkett. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children - Jerome G. (Jeffrey), Ronald P. (Tracy), Leora D. Walker (Roy), Bruce S. (Glenda), Scott T. (Dawn) and Leah Jenkins (like a daughter); his siblings - Barbara S. Hicks (Daniel, Jr.), Joseph H., Jr. (Dolores), Bernard A., Warren M. (Charlotte), and Gilbert L.(Geraldine); his grandchildren - Scott L., Tianna, Ronald Jr., Paul, Troy, Devon, Brendan and Brielle; his loving companion - Doris J. Jenkins; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.

There will be a viewing Friday, June 16 from 5-8 pm at Ezion UM Church, 800 N. Walnut Street, Wilm., There will be a Kappa Alpha Psi service will take place 7pm Friday. Funeral 9am Saturday, June 17 at the church with a viewing Sat. from 7:30 - 8:45am only. Burial Gracelawn Memorial Park
