Joan Fuqua McMahon Obituary
Joan Fuqua McMahon

AGE: 72 • Hockessin

Joan passed away peacefully at Christiana Hospital on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 with her loving family at her side.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware on August 24, 1943, Joan was the daughter of the late James A. and Mary Walsh Fuqua. She was a member of the first graduating class of Corpus Christi High School in 1961, and immediately began her career with the DuPont Company where she served as an executive secretary to several company executives. Joan retired from DuPont to care for her mother. She returned to the workforce with a limited schedule at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Delaware, and retired from "The Academy" in December 2014.

Joan lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed the company of her many friends, especially "her book club". She was a loving wife and mother, but excelled at being "Grammy" to her four grandchildren, whom she adored. Family was most important to her, and she cherished the Sunday dinners with immediate and extended family members. Joan instilled her love of retail therapy in her two granddaughters, who enjoyed many hours spent in Nordstrom with her. Her grandsons enjoyed special birthday lunches and loud cheers at their sporting events.

In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by several aunt and uncles.

Joan will be dearly missed by her husband, John J. McMahon, with whom she celebrated fifty years of marriage on May, 28, 2016; her daughter, Christine Subach (Dr. Peter Subach); and her son, John Patrick McMahon (Lisa), all of Hockessin. She leaves the loves of her life, her grandchildren, Meghan Subach, Caroline McMahon, Collin Subach and Brady McMahon. Joan is also survived by her brother, James A. Fuqua Jr., Esq. (Lynn); her sister, Ann Griffith (Doug); her sister-in-law, Morley Henry; and several nieces, nephews and their families.

The family wishes to extend their sincerest gratitude to Dr. Jamal Misleh and his staff, to the professional staff at the Helen Graham Cancer Center, and to the staff at the Ambulatory Infusion Center at Christiana Care for the kindness and compassion given to our wife and mother. Also, many thanks to Dr. Reinhardt for his care and kindness to all of us.

Visitation will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 9th and DuPont Streets, Wilmington on Monday, August 1 from 9:30-11:45AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00PM. Interment will follow in St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joan may be made to the Fr. James Trainor Scholarship Fund, 107 E. 14th St., Wilmington, DE 19801.
