JoAnn S. Seyfert

Hockessin - JoAnn S. Seyfert, 92, passed away peacefully on the morning of Monday, December 30, 2019.

She and her husband Rev. Frederick C. Seyfert, Jr., D. Min. were residents at Cokesbury Village since 2006 and most recently in Willow Brooke Court.

JoAnn was born in Rochester, New York, daughter and only child of the late Lyle Springstead and Marion Wait Holdridge. She was a graduate of Madison High School, located in Rochester, New York in 1945.JoAnn entered Geneseo State Teachers College, majoring in Library Science. She graduated in the spring of 1949 with a B.S. in Education. JoAnn and Fred were married in Asbury Methodist Church on December 30, 1949 in Rochester, New York. She received her Pennsylvania Permanent College Certificate in English, History, and Library Science.

JoAnn loved cats, skunks, and angels, and her hobbies included poetry, needlepoint, photography, stenciling, chalk drawings, painting, and traveling. Some of her needlepoint pieces were exhibited with the Needle Point Guild in Philadelphia and New York. Then some years later in Dover, Delaware, JoAnn designed and taught the ladies of Wesley United Methodist Church how to make the needlepoint pariments. She was a lifetime member of the Delaware Photographic Society where she has won numerous awards. JoAnn and Fred enjoyed extensive travel throughout the United States and internationally.

JoAnn was a librarian throughout New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. She worked at Houghton College Library in NY; Ft. LeBoeuf High School in PA; part time cataloguing the Napoleonian Collection at Franklin Marshall College, PA; half time at Moravian College and Seminary library in PA; Nazareth High School in PA; part time as a cataloguer at Bryn Mawr College in PA; Delaware State Library in DE; Lake Forrest High School in DE; and finally at Redding Middle School Library in DE, where she retired in 1991.

She was a longtime member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church since their retirement.

JoAnn is survived by her husband of 70 years, Rev. Frederick C. Seyfert, Jr., D. Min.; their daughter-in-law Nancy Smith (wife of her late son Robert L. Seyfert) of Wilmington, DE; their grandson Timothy J. Seyfert of Newark, DE and his mother Beverly Seyfert, of Sonoma, CA; her son William L. Seyfert and his wife Theresa of Bear, DE; their step granddaughter, Jennifer; their great step grandchildren, Reba and James and their great-great step grandchildren Beau and Liam.

The family will have on Saturday, Jan 4, 2020 a viewing at noon at Barrett's Chapel with a graveside service at 1:00 pm at Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, located at 6416 Bay Road, Frederica, Kent County, Delaware. There will also be a Celebration of Life on Sunday, Jan 5, 2020 at 1:30 pm at Cokesbury Village in the Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Camp Pecometh, 401 Jack Elliot. JoAnn was a volunteer here at the Winterthur Library for several years, and we so enjoyed her bright spirit and delightful companionship. May she rest in peace.
