AGE: 94 • Wilmington

Age 94, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Foulk Manor South.

Born in Marcus Hook, PA, John was the son of the late Constantine and Pauline (Mastalaz) Cheban. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Airforce during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Afterward, he worked for Bechtel Corp. for 10 years as a quality Assurance Engineer. He was involved in the Chester Optimist Club where he was Past President, the City Post 390 American Legion in Chester where he was Past Commander, the Chester Boys Club where he served as Past Vice President, the Chester Veterans Council where he was Senior Vice Commander, the Boy Scouts of America-Valley Forge Council where he was Assistant District Commissioner and the City Planning Commission, Chester, PA. He also was Section Chief and Instructor/Flight Examiner of the Delaware Air National Guard, President of the Air National Guard Credit Union; Section Chief and Instructor/Flight Examiner for the U.S. Air Force Reserve-Dover Air Force Base, Regional Supervisor for C. E. Lummus in Bloomfield, NJ and Regional Supervisor for Bechtel Corp., San Francisco, CA. His wife, Ada (Dujardin) Cheban, predeceased him in 2004.

John will be dearly missed by his sons, John "Ozzie" Cheban (Ginny) of Wilmington, DE; Marc F. Cheban of Middletown; his daughter, Lorraine Cheban Sinclair (Lewis) of Vienna, VA; his grandchildren, Christine O'Connor (Okey), Michelle Ziegler (Dave) and Shannon Kloman (Johnny) and his great grandchildren, John Robert, Liam and Sydney O'Connor and Reese, Adam and Jessica Ziegler.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 30th at 11 AM at St. Matthew's Church, 901 E. Newport Pike, Woodcrest where friends and family are invited to visitation after 10 AM. Burial will follow Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cemetery, Linwood, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 1601 Kirkwood Highway, Elsmere, DE 19805.Condolences may be made at MealeyFuneralHomes.com
