AGE: 89 • New Castle

John D. Walters, age 89, of New Castle, Delaware passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 1, 2016.

Born on October 23, 1926 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late David Walters and Helen (Simmers) Walters.

Mr. Walters proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy.

He made his career with the U.S. Government as a Postal Supervisor, retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. Following retirement, he enjoyed taking a position with Caravel Academy as a school bus driver, where he safely cared for and touched the lives of many young students.

Active in his community, he was a member of St. John's Lodge No. 2 - A.F. & A.M and the Scottish Rite of Delaware. For many years he enjoyed entertaining others as a Nur Temple clown. A devout Christian, he was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in New Castle.

Mr. Walters will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and dear friend to many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Van Ness and a grandson, Tony Boggs.

Mr. Walters is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ruth A. (Dugan) Walters; five children, Jack Walters (Carol) of Dover; Ronald Walters (Mary) of Bear; Richard Walters (Linda Engle) of Glen Burnie, MD; Mary Ann Atkinson (Herbert) of New Castle and Elizabeth Neubauer (Dave) of Hensley, AR; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Thursday morning, March 10, 2016 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where friends may visit with the family Wednesday evening, March 9, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 pm. Interment will follow services on Thursday at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to , 3551 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19140.
