John E. Pretka, Ph.D

AGE: 96 • Hockessin

John E. Pretka, Ph.D., age 96, of Hockessin, Delaware, died September 18, 2015 at Christiana Hospital.

Dr. Pretka retired from duPont's Textile Fibers Department as Senior Research Chemist. He had previously worked in chemical research for American Cyanamid and Stouffer Chemical Companies and Evans Associates in New York City. He attended Tufts, Columbia and New York Universities, receiving his doctorate in Chemistry at NYU in 1950. He was a WWII Veteran and a member of A.C.S., A.A.T.C.C., Sigma Xi and Phi Lambda Upsilon. He held several U.S. and foreign patents.

During his lifetime, he was active in instrumental and choral music. Locally, he played the violin with the Wilmington, Delaware and Newark Symphony Orchestras and sang with many choral groups, including the University of Delaware Choral Union, N.D.O.S., various church choirs, and he appeared in 17 musicals with The Brandywiners, Ltd. at Longwood Gardens and became a life member.

Dr. Pretka was predeceased by his wife of almost 71 years, Eleanor Pretka, in 2014. He is survived by his daughter Joyce and her husband John Hanselman; his son Jeffrey; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband Benjamin Ballard, and Matthew Hanselman and wife Jennifer; and five great-grandchildren: Henry, George, and Jane Hanselman, and John and Eleanor Ballard.

Burial will be private at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.
