AGE: 99 • Hockessin

John F. Whitney, 99, of Hockessin, formerly of Presque Isle, Maine, died on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Heartland Hospice House in Wilmington. John was a graduate of the University of Maine where he received his Bachelor's Degree and Cornell University where he received his PhD, he very much enjoyed his time at both. John was a life long student. He was always interested in learning, especially about mathematics and physics, he read the books of Steven Hawking many times. He enjoyed reading about early American history, especially the presidents and founders of the United States. John also enjoyed and was very skilled at carpentry and wood work.

He and Isabel enjoyed travel and traveled the world in retirement, visiting China, Hong Kong, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, France, Italy, Switzerland, the Virgin Islands, the British Isles and much of the United States and Canada. He especially enjoyed his trips to Maine to visit his old home in Presque Isle and spend time with family on Orr's and Bailey Islands.

John worked as a chemist for DuPont for 32 years. He also worked at Kodak and Armour Research of Chicago where he specialized in X-Ray diffraction. John belonged to the ACS and was a past President of the JCPDS, and a member of the Lamborn Library Board in Hockessin

John was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Isabella Whitney, by brothers, George and Sumner and his niece, Babe. He is survived by his son, Jim and his wife Mary, a granddaughter Emma, nieces, Lillian, Georgene and Charlene and a nephew, John.

Thanks to the compassionate people at Heartland Hospice, Arden Courts and Brookdale Hockessin who cared for him for the last year and a half.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 11:00AM at the Chandler Funeral Home, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin. Burial to follow at Hockessin Friends Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 10:00AM-11:00AM at Chandler Funeral Home, Hockessin. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County 1920 Hutton St., Wilmington, DE 19802 Phone: (302) 652-0365
