John Gordon Cummings

John Gordon Cummings (Wharton) of Wilmington, DE died Sunday July 31, 2016 at the Wilmington Hospital, Wilmington, DE. Raised in foster homes, Mr. Cummings took the Last name of Wharton, the family he spent his formative years with.

Mr. Cummings worked for the Brokerage firm of Lair, Bissell & Meeds, Inc. for fourteen years and the bank of Delaware for 30 years, and was WWII Army Veteran.

An avid traveler, he spent five weeks in India living on a houseboat in Kashmir and a lake palace un Udaipur, visited Petra, Jordan the "Red Rose city half as old as time," cruised the Greek Islands, traveled above the Arctic Circle and in the Himalaya Mountains and along the border of Tibet while in Nepal. In 1974, he went to Ecuador and Peru after visiting Matchu Picchu- the lost Inca city high in the Andes, he went up the Amazon River by small boat with two native boys and a Chinese cook. He wrote and account of this trip which led to a job a group tour host. He hosted his first trip to Russia in 1975 and among other things did the ground arrangements for a fashion study group from the University of Delaware, through Europe and hosted by their teacher.

Barbados, in the Caribbean Islands and Acapulco, Mexico were popular destinations for student groups and his last two trips were hosting a group from Goldy Beacom College to Acapulco and Co-hosting a large group to Hawaii.

When asked about a cruise, Mr. Cummings would recommend flying to Bergen, Norway and take a cruise ship through the Fjords and into the pack ice, an independent trip he took before joining group travel, this trip included Denmark and Sweden too.

Mr. Cummings is survived by two nephews, Gordon Sharer Cummings and his wife Jean, David Cummings and his wife Carolyn and Walter S. Cummings Jr. and his wife Joanne, 5 grand nephews, and 3 great grand nephews.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.
