John T. McDevitt Obituary
John T. McDevitt

AGE: 63 • Bear

John T. McDevitt, 63 of Bear, DE, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 18, 2016.

John was born in Shamokin, PA, grew up in New Castle, DE, and was a 1970 graduate of William Penn High School. After working for the M & K Bus Company for many years, he started his own transportation business, Spirit Trans Inc., which he operated for the last 8 years.

John was a very gregarious and fun-loving person. Seeming to know everyone in Delaware, he made friends everywhere he went. Adventurous and free-spirited, he often took long driving trips throughout the country, learned to fly airplanes and he even tried sky-diving. He also enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and gardening. He was an avid fan of the Phillies and Eagles and enjoyed the "classics", in both his rock music and taste in cars. John found joy in both sports and music, playing on and coaching championship baseball and softball teams, and even participating in and supporting local theater.

John was exceedingly proud of his children and supported them through all of their endeavors: school, sports, music and their careers. He cherished the memories he shared with them and was very proud of the young women and men they grew to become. He will be dearly missed.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Jessica McDevitt (Chad Moroz), Lauren McDevitt, Ryan, Sean and Connor McDevitt and Brenda Raab Lynch; his wife, Susan Doherty McDevitt; his grandchildren, Cameron McDevitt, Wesley Hetzler and Alexa Moroz; his mother, Theresa McDevitt; and his siblings, Patrick McDevitt (Donna), Carol Snyder (Tim) and Elizabeth Haupt (Keith).

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Buggy.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 from 5:00 - 7:00pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at 2:00pm. Interment will be held privately with John's family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory can be made in support of funding music programs in schools around the country via the National Association of Music Merchants, 5790 Armada Drive, Carlsbad, CA 92008;
