During his hospital stays in Philadelphia, he made new friends with patients, nurses, doctors, transport teams and receptionists. John was a larger than life personality, who built airplanes, race cars, gardens, train sets, he loved road trips, music, outdoors, football, baseball and most importantly family and friends. John is predeceased by his father William Eckstein; and his son John W. Eckstein Jr. John is survived by his wife of 33 years Janis K. (Freebery) Eckstein; his daughter Adrian L.
