AGE: 79 • Wilmington

José Herminio "Miño" Figueroa, age 79 of Wilmington, Delaware passed away on December 5, 2016 in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he had recently moved. His daughter Luz and her husband James were by his side.

"Miño" was born in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico on April 25, 1937. As a teenager, he moved to San Francisco to pursue a career in boxing, he lived there briefly until he moved to New York City, in the mid 1950's. In 1963, he met Minerva Otero Sanchez. They married on March 13, 1965, had three daughters, and moved to Wilmington, Delaware in 1973. They divorced in 1983, but neither ever remarried. They lived close enough where Minerva always tended to him. She would take him home cooked meals that he loved, buy him groceries, and clean his apartment.

"Miño" was an avid runner, who ran marathons. In his later years, he would walk up and down 4th Street and could be found many times at "Victors" store. He loved to play dominoes, watch baseball, drink Manischewitz wine and have T-bone steaks. He was a faithful member of PDH Ministry, a Mason, and worked as a foster grandpa where many children loved him. He was a school bus driver for Red Clay School District for many years. Not everyone knew that one of his dreams was to fight at Madison Square Garden, which he did.

He is survived by his daughters: Marianela, Luz Minerva "Chickey", and Grisela; granddaughters: Nichole, Jasyline, Bianca, and Desiray; grandson, Quentin and recently born great-granddaughter, Maliyah; 6 sisters; 1 brother; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews in New York, New Jersey, Florida and Puerto Rico; as well as many friends in Delaware and his best friend "Cheito" from Bronx, New York.
