Joseph Casimir Nowak Jr. Obituary
Joseph Casimir Nowak Jr.

AGE: 79 • Talleyville

Joseph C. Nowak, age 79, passed away unexpectedly after a short, but severe illness on Dec. 10.

Joe was the only child of Joseph Sr. and Helen Nowak of Chester Pa... He was born and raised in Chester Pa. Joe and his family moved to Wilmington in 1965. They first lived in Fairfax for many years, and then moved to Tavistock, where he spent the next 40 years.

Joe was a graduate of St. James High School where he excelled on the baseball team. He then went to Villanova University and graduated with a degree in accounting. Joe was a huge Villanova basketball fan and never missed a game. He spent almost his entire professional life working for the Internal Revenue Service out of the Wilmington Office. He also taught accounting in the evenings at Wilmington College for many years.

Joe was an avid fisherman and spent many years fishing for trout on the Delaware Bay and rockfish on the Chesapeake. The Delaware Bay trips in his first boat were always an adventure and his son shares many memories of 'lost at sea" incidents. In his later years he became a superior fly fisherman and took trips throughout the world with his buddy Al Perrino. No fish was safe when this pair had a line in the water. Besides fishing Joe was an excellent crabber. He spent many days on the Wye and Chester Rivers and rarely came home with less than a bushel of Jumbos. If Joe hadn't become an accountant he would have been a good Eastern Shore Waterman. He was happiest on the water.

Joe's greatest joy and sense of pride was his family. Joe was a great father and a greater grandfather. He spent the majority of his retirement time catering to his grandchildren.

Joe is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 60 years Dolores (Smith). Joe is also survived by his 4 children who will miss him immensely. They are John (Maryanne) of Ocean City, Md., Mary Anttila, Joanne (Dahlia of Frankfurt, Germany) and Kathleen Frey (Tom) of Talleyville. He is also survived by the joys of his life, his four granddaughters Kellie Nowak, Michelle Nowak, Catherine Frey, Alison Frey and grandson Gabriel Lewis. Joe will also be missed by his "best girl", Bridie, who will miss her 8:00 treats from her daddy.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 from 10:00 -11:00 a.m. at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike (Rt. 202 South of Silverside Road), Wilmington, DE 19803. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen R.C. Church, Sharpley & Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. Burial will be at St. Joseph on the Brandywine.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of The Poor and Talleyville Fire Company. To send condolences visit:
