AGE: 94 • Hockessin

Joseph Dodsworth Weed passed away peacefully at his home in Hockessin, DE Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at the age of 94.

Joe was born on January 20, 1922 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada to Harry and Hilda Weed. His family moved to Vancouver where he graduated from Lord Byng High School and the University of British Columbia.

During World War II, Joe served as a Lieutenant (E) in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. He saw duty on frigate escorts and minesweeper class boats in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea from 1943-1945.

After the war he earned his masters degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In 1947 he began a 39 year career as a mechanical engineer with the DuPont Co. in Wilmington, DE.

During his career at DuPont he specialized in designing gear pumps and equipment, including exotic high temperature and pressure gear pumps.

He married Sara C. Squires in 1952. They built their dream house in Hockessin and together raised their three children.

Joe enjoyed the outdoors and was as a member of the Wilmington Trail Club, and the Wilmington Ski Club where he met his future wife.

Joe enjoyed singing, and was a tenor in The Ardensigners, The Northern Delaware Oratorio Society and The Newcastle Choral Society.

He was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church where he served several terms on the vestry and sung in the church choir. Recently he was a member of Christ Church, Greenville, DE.

He was a friendly and personable soul. A loving husband, father and friend he will be greatly missed. Joe is survived by his wife of 63 years Sara and children, Harry, Andy (Connie) and Brenda (Robert) Steffon.

The family thanks Christiana Care Visiting Association and Compassionate Care Hospice for their care of Joe and his family, with special thanks to Sayonnoh Benson of Griswold Home Care.

Interment will be private and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in Joe's name to Delaware Nature Society, Development Office, PO Box 700, Hockessin, DE 19707.
