Claymont - Joseph F. Paulson, age 94, one of the good guys, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2018 after of a life of service to God, family, church and community.

He was born in Boston, MA, to the late Mary (Mieszkierewicz) and Adam Paulson who emigrated from Lithuania. At the age of 16, he entered Boston College while supporting himself as a dishwasher and machine shop inspector. At age 18, Joe proudly enlisted in the US Navy serving in the Pacific Theater on the USS Bristol Destroyer. After the war, he returned to Boston College and earned a BS in Chemistry and continued at MIT. He married the love of his life, Mary Enegess in 1950 in Newton, MA. Shortly after, they moved to Delaware where he started his 33 year career as a research chemist at the Sun Oil Refinery in Marcus Hook. Joe was an innovator in the new field of Mass Spectrometry and then directed the M.S. Lab at Sun Oil. He was granted 5 patents while at Sun Oil. After retirement, he worked at NOR-AM.

Moving his growing family to Claymont in 1955, Joe humbly became an active community member, offering wholesome activities for Claymont children. He volunteered in Radnor Green's civic activities including Community Night Watch and was Santa Claus for 25 years. Joe was a Cub Master and Webloe Den Leader with his two sons. Joe ran the "Canteen" at the Claymont High School Dances. Along with his wife Mary, he served Meals on Wheels for many years.

While the Claymont Library resided at the Claymont Stone School until recently, Joe was passionately involved and volunteered wherever he was needed, including repairing audio-visual media. Joe was a past president of the Friends of Claymont Library. Joe was proud to be present at the opening of the New Claymont Library on Lenape Way in which the computer area was dedicated to him.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Church since 1955. Joe was instrumental in the development of the Home and School Association, Co-Chairman of the Holy Rosary Carnival for several years, Parish Council Member, and volunteer bartender at many parish events. Walking around Claymont, he could be seen collecting aluminum cans, then graciously donating the recycling proceeds to the Holy Rosary Outreach Food Pantry Program, Girl Scouts and Boys Scouts.

He enjoyed reading science fiction, vegetable gardening, feeding the birds and the squirrels, and collecting comics and reading stories to his visually impaired friends. From a 1983 PC to his present MP3 player, Joe quenched his thirst of lifelong learning. His innovative use from recycled materials was an added hobby.

Joe was also preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary who died in 2015, and his daughter Kristin Cain who died in 2009. He is survived by 6 children; Kathleen "Kappy" Paulson (Jeff Heath), Anthony Paulson (Joan Benderson), Noelle Paulson, Lisa Leach (John), Andrea Paulson, Nicholas Paulson (Eileen); son-in-law Charlie Cain (Barbara Weaver); 11 grandchildren Julia Marsh (Adam), Nolan Heath, Charles "CJ" Cain (Angie), Joseph Cain (Laura Jean), Phillip and Monica Paulson, Brianna Capillo, Andrea and Joanna Leach, and Kathleen and Nicholas Paulson and 2 great-grandsons, Jake and Danny Cain.
