Joseph Francis Obituary
Joseph Francis

AGE: 94 • New Castle

Joseph Francis, 94, formerly of New Castle, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2016 at Arden Courts. He was born in Kalisz, Poland in 1921 and survived six years of forced labor under the Nazi occupation. He met his wife, Janina, also a Pole, after he was liberated by the U.S. Army, and waited patiently to emigrate to Sussex County, DE in 1949. In 1959, they moved to New Castle, where they raised their two children. A man of great hospitality, intelligence, and grace, he overcame the disadvantages of language, poverty, and curtailed education to become a successful manager at Bell's Supply and to procure a better life for his family.

Mr. Francis is survived by son, Joseph, Jr. and his wife Gale, of Washington, DC; daughter Julia Francis Miller and her husband Earle of Elkton, MD; grandson Jonathan Bryce Miller and his wife Elisa, of Charlotte, VT; and great-grandchildren Oliver, Samuel, and Emerson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Janina Francis.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd, Newark, DE 19702 from 10-11 a.m. followed by Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
