Joseph J. Dallabrida

AGE: 88 • Hockessin

Joseph Dallabrida, 88 of Hockessin, DE, passed away peacefully at the Heartland Hospice House on Monday, December 26, 2016, with his loving family by his side.

Joe was born in Marion Heights, PA, son of the late Louis and Rose (Spadel) Dallabrida. After graduating high school, Joe enlisted in the Army and served in World War II. Upon his discharge, he returned home and began working on his undergraduate studies. While attending State Teachers College in East Stroudsburg, PA, he was called to serve in the Korean War. When he returned home again, he completed his Bachelor of Science in Health Education. He later attained his Master's degree from the University of Delaware. Joe went on to enjoy a 30-plus year teaching career, starting at John M. Clayton School in Dagsboro, then Dickinson High School and, ultimately, McKean High School, both in Wilmington. He was primarily a Physical Education and Health teacher, but also instructed Driver's Education. Over the years, he coached several championship high school football teams and led the McKean swim team to many victorious seasons.

Joe met the love of his life, Dorothy Keiser, while they were in high school. They were married when Joe returned from serving his country. They started their family as Joe pursued his teaching career, ultimately settling their family in Wilmington. Joe and Dorothy enjoyed traveling and spent their summers taking the family on camping trips throughout North America. As their children grew up, Joe and Dorothy continued to travel around the country and around the world. Joe was an avid sports fan and also enjoyed gardening. He loved spending time with his family and especially cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy; his sons, Daniel (Deary Paul), and Douglas; his daughter, Diane Fisher (Jay); his daughter-in-law, Eileen; his grandchildren, Douglas, Jr., Chelsea, Harrison, and Hayden; and his great-grandchildren, Ariahnah and Tre.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his oldest son, Dale; his daughter-in-law, Hope; and his brother, Louis Dallabrida and his wife, Martha.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit from 9:45 am - 10:45 am. Interment will follow Mass in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joe's memory can be made to the Evergreen Center, Re: Joseph Dallabrida, 1 Reads Way, Suite 100, New Castle, DE 19720, Attn: Naomi Price - Evergreen.
