Joseph J. Ranallo, M.D.

Wilmington

April 14, 1939 - February 25, 2017

Joseph J. Ranallo M.D. died at home on Saturday evening following a brief illness.

Joseph was born in Sharon, PA, the only child of Guy and Margaret (Cantelupe) Ranallo. He earned his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and his M.D. from Temple University. During his senior year, he met and married Charlotte A. Callan and moved to San Francisco for his internship and first years of residency. He completed his training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Temple Hospital and University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine before serving at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center as a LCDR. Returning to San Francisco, he worked as Director of Rehabilitation Services at Ralph K. Davies Medical Center and Harkness Hospital. In 1975, he was president of the California Society of P.M. & R. and worked as a consultant at U.C.S.F., Veterans Hospitals in San Francisco and Martinez and Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield, CA. He was in private practice in Santa Barbara County for many years before returning to the East Coast, ultimately joining the Rehabilitation Group at Wilmington/Christiana Hospitals until his retirement in 2006. He then enjoyed doing locum tenens work in several states including Indiana, Vermont, Tennessee and Montana.

He and his wife of 52 years shared a lifetime love of travel. He was as well an optimist and a humanist who appreciated fine music and the written word. Sitting down to play the piano was an evening ritual. A lovely, thoughtful man, he was a great husband and father who will be missed.

The family wishes to thank Matthew Burday, M.D., his caring physician in health and illness, and the wonderful staff at Compassionate Care Hospice, especially Ben and Liz.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Charlotte, and his son, Michael of Wilmington, DE.

A private celebration of Joseph's life is planned by family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Meals on Wheels at 100 West 10th Street #207, Wilmington, DE 19801 or a . To offer condolences, visit MealeyFuneralHomes.com.
