AGE: 85 • Wilmington

Joseph Van Veen, 85, died on February 1st, 2016 at Arden Courts of Wilmington, DE.

Joe was born in the spring of 1930 to the late Anton and Engelina Van Veen. He was the eighth of their nine children and the last to survive. He was also predeceased by his youngest daughter Marybeth.

Joe attended St. Paul's school and Brown Vocational school. He enlisted in the Airforce in 1950 and served his country for four years. After his discharge he began a long career as a bricklayer working as a foreman for John B. Kelly, Inc. He also worked as head of maintenance at Brandywood Elementary School for five years and retired in 1997.

Joe is survived by Mary, his wife of 60 years; two sons, Joseph and his wife Nancy of Hockessin, DE, Patrick of West Grove, PA, one daughter Rita of Wilmington, DE, and one granddaughter Sarah, of Hockessin, DE. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Jean Van Veen of Glen Mills, PA, Rosie Van Veen of Hamford, CA, and Marian Gleason of West Chester, PA; one brother-in-law, William Gleason, and his wife Dolores, of West Chester, PA, and many nieces and nephews.

Joe will be lovingly remembered by all his family and friends. He was a man of loyalty and integrity who possessed a generous and kind heart. He was blessed with a mechanically gifted mind and a talent for preparing gourmet meals. He was always ready to help those in need.

A special thanks to the staff at Arden Courts for their kindness and good humor in making Joe feel at home.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday February 10, 2016 at 1 PM at St. Helena's Catholic Church, 602 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE 19809. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2 PM at St. Helena's. The burial service will be private.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Joe's name to 'Southern Poverty Law Center' 400 Washington Ave. Montgomery, AL 36104 or 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
