Joyce L. Kent Obituary
Joyce L. Kent

Joyce L. Kent, 86, of Wilmington, Delaware, died peacefully on 15th of August, 2016, after a long illness. Joyce was a devoted wife of 64 years, and a loving mother of four, proud grandmother of eight, and great-grandmother of one. She was a generous, fun, active and thoughtful friend, neighbor, mother-in-law and church member. Joyce Ione Lewis was born on August 15, 1930, in Centerville, Iowa, daughter of the late John and Kate Best Lewis. At age 5, she moved with her family to Smithtown, Long Island, New York, and graduated in 1947 from Smithtown High School, where she played several sports, excelling in field hockey. In 1950, she graduated from Wesley College in Dover, Delaware (where she was elected May Queen and again played field hockey). She then attended Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, where she met her future husband, and the captain of the basketball team, Bill Kent. After their marriage in 1951, Joyce worked for Delaware's Secretary of State for four years, which included the time of Bill's service of 13 months as a Sergeant in the US Army during the Korean War. Between 1955 and 1962, they fielded a team of four daughters to whom Joyce devoted herself, immersing herself in their school events, Girl Scouts, sports, music lessons, family vacations and holidays. The family spent five years in Sarasota, Florida, before returning to the Wilmington, Delaware, area. She worked as a preschool teacher part-time, then worked full-time until retirement at the Nemours Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children as secretary to the director of the Nursing Department. When their daughters married and provided Joyce and Bill with their eight grandchildren, Joyce enjoyed the grandchildren enormously. She also enjoyed traveling with friends and family, and made very satisfying trips to England, Scotland, and Wales, as well as U.S. destinations such as the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. A long-time Episcopalian, Joyce was an active member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Wilmington. Joyce is survived by her husband, Bill; her daughters, Melanie Kent-Richmond, Leslie Kent (Mike), Tracie Bonvetti (Joe), Lori Krinsky (Howard); her grandchildren, Marie, Joe Jr., Shelby, Cana, Ben, Hailey, Evan and Jack; her great-granddaughter Ella Joyce; and many dear friends. The family would like to express their appreciation for the kindness and care of the staff of Maris Grove Home Support, especially Monica Bryant, Fay Sterling, Amy, Ty and Gay, and Willow Tree Hospice, especially Cindy, Lu and Felicia.

A memorial service in celebration of Joyce's life will be held on Saturday, August 20, at St. David's Episcopal Church, 2320 Grubb Road, Wilmington, DE 19810. There will be a visitation at 10:30am and a service at 11:30am. A reception luncheon will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, 1901 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. To send messages of condolence visit www.mc creryandharra.com
