Julian Robert Taplin Obituary
Julian Robert Taplin

AGE: 78 • Wilmington

Julian Robert Taplin died in the hospital after a short but intense battle with a severe respiratory illness on January 18th, 2016, at the age of 78. Julian, son of Eric Taplin and Jane (Cannell) Taplin, is survived by his wife Carolyn Gibson, son Gregory, daughter Susan, stepsons William and Douglas and 2 sisters, Christine and Geraldine. Julian also leaves behind 3 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren, of whom he was very proud, and a countless number of beloved friends, students and extended family. Julian's legacy of great love and a life lived fully and from the heart will never be forgotten.

Born in England in 1937, Julian's early life was greatly shaped by WWII and included leaving Europe as a refugee of the war, crossing the Atlantic in the last peacetime ship to leave France and being stopped by a U-boat in the middle of the Atlantic. He attended 13 schools before his college education began. After his military service with the US Army, he enjoyed a long career as a clinical psychologist in Portland, OR where he raised his children and later in Wilmington, DE where he served as Director, Division of Child Mental Health Services and retired in 2001. He served as Guest Professor at Sichuan Academy of Social Science since 1998 and published more than 15 books in Chinese. In retirement, Julian continued to bless many lives through his teaching, book writing, and relationships in China over the next 15 years. He was granted an honorary citizenship by the City of Chengdu, China and was beloved by many there who affectionately called him "teacher" or "uncle". His heart's work in China culminated in the building of the Da Wo YouAi Hope School in rural Sichuan Province, where hundreds of Chinese youth were given the opportunity to learn and grow in their early educational years.

A memorial service is being planned to be held at Immanuel Church, Highlands, 2400 W. 17th Street, Wilmington, DE 19806. The family suggests that contributions in Julian's honor may be made to support the Hope School through the Julian R. Taplin Memorial Fund, Wells Fargo Bank, or the .
