Karen Lee Stearns

Karen Lee (Van Hook) Stearns died peacefully at home in Beaufort, SC, on February 13, 2017 surrounded by her family.

Karen was born on May 9, 1948 in Somers Point, NJ to Martin and Anne Van Hook. She was a 1965 graduate of Newark High School (DE) and a 1969 graduate of the University of Delaware. In June 1970, she married Richard Stearns and spent the next 27 years traveling the US with him as a proud Marine Corps wife. Throughout her life, she was involved in the educational system as a full-time teacher and later a substitute teacher. She was an avid reader, was fiercely creative, loved yoga and summers at the Jersey Shore. She will be remembered for her boisterous personality, her sense of humor, and never being at a loss for words.

Karen is survived by her husband of 46 years, Col. Richard D. Stearns; daughters Jennifer Gallo (Al) and Katie Rummel (Craig); grandchildren Tyler, Emily, Porter, and Bowman; and brother, David Van Hook. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jeffrey Van Hook.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Beaufort Memorial Hospital and the staff of The Friends of Caroline Hospice, who took such good care of her during her final days.

At Karen's request, services and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, Karen suggests making a gift in her memory to your local chapter of Planned Parenthood or The Friends of Caroline Hospice at www.friendsof
