Katherine R. Henry Obituary
Katherine R. Henry

AGE: 77 • Wilmington

Katherine R. (Hazzard) Henry, 77, of Hockessin, DE, passed away peacefully at her son and daughter-in-law's home in Charleston, SC, on Tuesday, December 15, 2015.

Kay was an active, generous woman who gave joyfully of her time and talents. Proud of her Forty Acres roots, she grew up in a close-knit family of nine children. She graduated from St. Ann's Elementary School and wrote an essay that helped win her a scholarship to Ursuline Academy. In high school she played basketball and softball, sang in the chorus, and made many lifelong friends.

Later, when her children attended Ursuline, Kay became one of the school's most dependable volunteers and a perennial homeroom mother. Taking Ursuline's Serviam motto to heart, she delivered meals to homebound seniors for Meals on Wheels for more than 35 years and cared for several elderly family members.

Kay met her future husband, Thomas Martin Henry, at St. Ann's, where they were married on April 23, 1960. Kay and Tom shared a strong Catholic faith and devotion to their families. They were wise and loving parents who spent countless hours reading to their two children, coaching or cheering them on at their many sporting events, and taking them on expeditions as close as Rockford Tower and as far as their father's family home in County Sligo, Ireland. Kay later enjoyed following the academic and sporting endeavors of her four grandchildren.

Kay learned to play golf after her children started school. She loved to laugh about the early days of her golf career, when she and a friend would just manage to play nine holes, with a rest in the middle to eat lunch. Her game quickly improved, and she successfully competed in tournaments and enjoyed traveling to play famous golf courses with her husband and friends. She was very proud of parring the Island Green 17th at TPC Sawgrass and the 18th at Pebble Beach. Kay also brought her volunteer spirit and organizational skills to golf, serving on the boards of the Cavaliers Country Club Women's Golf Association and the Delaware Women's Golf Association, including stints as president of both organizations.

Kay is survived by her two children: daughter, Kathleen Shears and her husband, Nick, of Arlington, VA, and son, Joe Henry and his wife, Kelly, of Charleston, SC. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jonathan and Conor Shears, and Tom and Blair Henry; sister-in-law, Sandy Hazzard of Kennett Square, PA; sister, Rose Potts and her husband, Jack, of Wilmington; brother, Peter J. Hazzard and his wife, Dona, of Oxford, PA; brother, the Reverend William M. Hazzard of Wilmington; brother, Thomas Hazzard and his wife, Cathy, of Wilmington; sister, Marie Rossbach and her husband, Tom, of Ft. Collins, CO; sister, Betsy Deldeo and her husband, Tony, of Wilmington; and many loving nieces and nephews in the US, Ireland and England. Kay was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Tom; parents, John Patrick Hazzard Sr. and Katherine Kindbeiter Hazzard; a sister, Mary Ann Hazzard; and a brother, John Patrick Hazzard Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Gilpin Avenue and Union Street, Wilmington on Tuesday, December 22 at 11:00AM. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington. Family and friends may visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, Wilmington on Monday, December 21 from 5:00-7:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ursuline Academy, Advancement Office, 1106 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806 or at, or to The Charleston Catholic School, 888 King St., Charleston, SC 29403 or at
