AGE: 87 • Wilmington, Del.

Lewis C. Bancroft, 87, of Wilmington died on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, at the Country House, Wilmington. He was born in Reading, MA, in 1929, and spent much of his childhood in Boothbay, Maine. Lewis graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, in 1946. He earned two degrees from Princeton University, a B.S. in 1950 and an M.S. in 1952, and was an active Princeton alumnus. Lewis worked for DuPont from 1951-1985 as a laboratory manager and ultimately as DuPont's manager of patents and contracts. He owned several patents, including the "Process for thermoremanent duplication of magnetic tapes using transverse laser beams spanning the tape width."

Lewis was a member of the Wilmington Country Club and the Sea Pines Country Club in Hilton Head, SC. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed playing golf and squash. He loved to travel and took his family on many trips in the U.S. and other countries. Lewis also loved music and played the piano by ear. He was a long time member of the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington.

Lewis was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Irene Simonton "Sis" Bancroft and a brother, Philip L. Bancroft, and Philip's wife Nancy. He is survived by his 8 children and their families: Stephen L. Bancroft (Mary Alice) and their children, Lewis and Benjamin, Ellen W. Bancroft; Betsey P. Wu (Yue) and their daughter, Vivian; Donald W. Foster (Shelley) and his daughter, Lindsay; Fay M. Foster-Felty (Jeffrey) and their sons, Robert and Edward; Frances G. Foster-Fosselman (Bruce) and their sons, Michael and Peter; Thomas E. Bancroft (Bonnie) and their children, Nicholas, Winifred, Cornelius, and George; and Jay S. Bancroft (Lelane), and one great grandchild, Sage Felty. He is also survived by a nephew, Philip L. Bancroft, Jr., and niece Ruth B. Bancroft.

A celebration of life will be held at the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington on Saturday, September 3 at 2 PM. Contributions may be sent in Lewis's memory to either Planned Parenthood, 625 N Shipley St, Wilmington, DE, 19801 or to the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington, 730 Halstead Rd, Wilmington, DE, 19803.
