Lois Jean Lennon Obituary
Lois Jean Lennon

AGE: 92 • Wilmington

(April 2, 1925 - July 17, 2017)

To her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was a superhero. To her church family, she was a saint. Professionally, she was Florence Nightingale. To her husband Bob Lennon, who passed away in 2003, she was everything.

Lois was a world traveler, tap and ballroom dancer, clarinetist, registered nurse, accomplished seamstress, songstress, champion quilter, high school musical diva, an avid reader. Superb at baking, cake decorating, ceramics, needlepoint, and at engaging perfect strangers in conversation to brighten their day, Lois spent every precious minute of her life mindfully with purpose, endless energy, kindness, courage, humor, and most importantly, selflessness. There was no challenge too daunting if it benefited her family or her stalwart groups of beloved friends.

Hailing from West Virginia, Lois earned her R.N. at Fairmont General Hospital where she met and married her patient's son (James Robert Lennon). The family moved to Wilmington, where, after raising their four children, Lois returned to nursing at St. Francis Hospital, Brandywine Convalescent Center and Episcopal Church Home. After retiring, she grandparented an army of grandchildren and great grandchildren, passing on her passions for dance, singing, sewing, needlework, baking, and for one young boy, vacuum cleaners. Lois was equally comfortable defending a soccer goal as teaching Monopoly strategy and sharing the secret behind the perfect cookie. She was the loudest and proudest spectator at graduations, stage performances, horse shows, swim meets, sports events, cheer competitions, and recitals across the country. By example, she cultivated careers in the medical field among several of her offspring.

Lois delighted in her community at St. Mary of the Assumption R. C. Church, where she was a Eucharistic Minister to the Sick, a member of the Ladies' Guild and the Sages. She was also a proud member of the Red Hat Society. Birds and squirrels call her backyard an oasis with its multitude of feeders. And the celebration of Christmas will be one notch less festive without Lois's nine gorgeously decorated trees that graced her home from October through February.

Lois passed away comforted by the hands of her children: Gary Patrick Lennon (Linda), Pam Howard, Robin Williams and Mike Lennon (Dottie). Her life is also celebrated with deep gratitude by her grandchildren: Sean Lennon (Amanda), Sarah Keyes (Brian), Kelley Aston (Wayne), Brad Wockenfuss, Jeremy Wockenfuss (Pam), Caitlin Reste (Kevin), Travis Williams (Bess), Zachary Williams, Mackenzie Houser (Mike), Josh and Elena Lennon, Vanessa Stout (Daniel) and David Mays (Jackie). Great-grandchildren, some too little to have fully appreciated the richness of her spirit will miss her terribly nonetheless: Cole and Drew Lennon, Tanner and Layla Aston, Alex and Emily Wockenfuss, and Eric, Jacob, Noah, Jocelyn and Maddox Stout.

Heaven gained a superhero, a saint and a Florence Nightingale today.

Friends and family are invited to visitation on Friday, July 21st between 6 and 8 PM at Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington.
