Louis Paul Scalia, Sr.

AGE: 80 • Newark

Louis passed away peacefully in his sleep at home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, July 9, 2016.

Louis was born in Wilmington, DE on November 29, 1935, one of six children of James and Angeline Scalia. He met the love of his life, Esther Brittingham, and they married on August 11, 1956. Together they raised five sons.

Louis was employed as an iron worker prior to his employment with General Motors, from where he retired in September 1997. Louis and Esther owned and operated a family business, Scalia's Day Care Center, where he served as head of maintenance.

Louis is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Esther; his sons, Louis Paul Jr. (Carole) of Hockessin, Anthony (Annlynn) of Wilmington, Michael (Laraine) of Wilmington, James (Claudia) of Landenberg, PA, and Joseph of Newark; his twelve grandchildren, Jenna, Louis III and Brittani Scalia, Anthony, Nicholas and Dominic Scalia, Ashley Bensinger and Michael Dillon Scalia, Danielle and Elise Scalia, Gianna and Ariana Scalia; and his two great grandchildren, Sophia and Dominic Jr. Also surviving are his siblings, James Scalia, Dolores Tolino and Rose DiBuo.

Louis was a wonderful family man, and especially devoted to all of his grandchildren.

He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and all the children of the Scalia Day Care Center, who referred to him as Pop Pop and enjoyed many train rides and his homemade train.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Wednesday, July 13 from 5:00-7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by his nephew, Fr. Roger DiBuo, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 345 Bear-Christiana Road, Bear on Thursday, July 14 at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Louis may be made to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, Newark, DE 19711.
