Mabel Betz Erickson Obituary
Mabel Betz Erickson

AGE: 94 • Wilmington

Mabel Erickson passed away peacefully on September 8, 2015 in her home at Shipley Manor in Wilmington, DE. She was 94. Mom was born on January 17, 1921 in Rensselaer, NY to Phillip and Emma Betz. Although she was an only child, she grew up surrounded by nine aunts and uncles, their spouses and numerous cousins in a lively family. Upon graduation from high school, she attended secretarial school and then worked as an executive secretary at Winthrop Chemical Company in Albany NY, where she met her future husband, Ernst S Erickson, Jr. They were married in 1945 and were together for 58 years, until Dad's passing in 2003. After WWII, during which Dad served in the Navy, they settled in Wilmington where Dad began work at the DuPont Company. Mom was a homemaker and raised their only child. She was a long-time member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church and there served in many volunteer capacities, including membership on Church Council, head of Lutheran Women and Alter Guild, and long-time aid at Luther Towers.

Mom is survived by their daughter Carol Erickson and son-in-law David Phillips; granddaughters, Katie Phillips, Stephanie Setzer-Phillips (Ryan) and Julianne Eberle (Adam); and great-grandchildren Elena, Gabe, Samuel and Michaela. All live in or near Davis, CA. We are especially grateful to Mom's long-time, round-the-clock caregivers, Synthia Freeman and Mandi Lane, whose love and compassion were a source of great spiritual and physical comfort. Thanks also to the many wonderful staff at Shipley Manor, which was Mom's home for over 10 years.

A memorial service will be held at Shipley Manor, 2723 Shipley Road, Wilmington, DE on Friday, October 16, 2015 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to in her memory.
