Obituary Condolences

Madeleine Marie Hughes

AGE: 73 • Kennett Square, PA

Madeleine Marie (Bunny) Hughes, 73, of Kennett Square, PA, devoted wife of the late James A. Hughes, Jr., died after a short illness on November 16, 2015, with her loving family by her side. Bunny was born in Wilmington, DE, the daughter of Joseph Patrick Monaghan and Margaret Mary Neiss Monaghan. She attended Ursuline Academy, and as an adult, graduated from West Chester University. Bunny worked for Atlas Chemical Co., later ICI Americas, Inc., for 22 years before retiring in 1993. After graduating from college in 1997, Bunny rejoined the workforce with Zeneca Ag Products (Syngenta) and held various training positions until 2001, when she began a courageous and ultimately successful battle with breast cancer. Bunny was devoted to her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them individually and as a group for "cousin reunions" at her homes in West Chester and the Delaware seashore. She enjoyed keeping a loving nest for her family and caring for others in the truest sense of the word. She will be remembered for her winning smile, quick wit, strong faith and tireless efforts to raise the spirits of those struggling with difficult issues.

Bunny was predeceased by her parents and her husband of 29 years, James. She is survived by her four children: Brian K. Williamson of Wilmington, DE and his wife Catherine (grandsons Kyle and Patrick); Michele K. Williamson of Kennett Square, PA (grandson Nathan and granddaughter Anna); Patrick K. Williamson of Harrington, DE and his wife Lisa (grandsons Scout, Patrick, and Logan); Robert K. Williamson of Wilmington, DE; two stepchildren, Douglas J. Hughes of Arlington, VA and his wife Frances McLaughlin (Douglas and Mack); and Kathleen A. Hughes of Los Angeles, CA and her husband Daniel Bethencourt (Daniel and Isabel). She is also survived by her sisters: Joanne E. Boyle of Hendersonville, NC and her husband Michael; and Virginia Hartwich of Lake Mary, FL and her husband Edmund; nephews Joseph Hartwich of Vienna, VA; Michael Hartwich and wife Alison Bell (great nephews Samuel and Adam), of Fairfax, VA; niece Lisa McKinney and her husband Michael of Seattle, WA.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Chadds Ford, PA, on December 4, at 10:00 a.m., with a one-hour visitation before Mass. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Madeleine's name to the St. Cornelius Church Outreach Program.
