Margaret J. Grant Obituary
Margaret J. Grant

AGE: 93 • Wilmington

Margaret J. Grant, age 93 and a resident of Wilmington for nearly 50 years, died in suburban Philadelphia on June 14, 2017 as the result of dementia and Parkinson's disease. She and her beloved husband Dave, who died at age 91 in 2015, met as high school juniors Milwaukee, Wisconsin at age 15. They graduated together from Milwaukee University School in 1941, where Maggie was ranked first in their class. They were married for almost 70 years.

After Dave decided to attend Haverford College, Maggie followed him east from Wisconsin to go to college at Bryn Mawr, and she readily acknowledged that she had chosen Bryn Mawr College over Vassar College so that she could "major in David Grant." She was a summa cum laude graduate of that department. Her more academic major at Bryn Mawr was chemistry, at which she also excelled and in which she earned a master's degree at the University of Wisconsin. She worked as a chemist until her son Duncan was born in 1950. She later pursued bridge, golf, knitting, weaving, reading, crossword puzzles, and long walks on the beach; her friends will recall that she couldn't sit still for even five minutes. Maggie and Dave spent most of their adult years in Wilmington. Following Dave's retirement, he and Maggie lived variously in Avalon, New Jersey; Green Valley, Arizona; and Oxford, Pennsylvania.

Maggie cared deeply about her many friends. She taught her two sons the value of focus, hard work, and discipline, and she instilled in them the belief that every person, no matter what his or her station may be, is equally important. She was concerned throughout her life about the plight of those who were less fortunate than she.

Maggie is survived by her son Duncan (wife Vicki) and grandson Tom (wife Christine). Tragically, Maggie and Dave's brilliant and talented younger son Randy died in 1981.

For those who wish to make a donation in memory of Maggie, please consider a gift to Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania, 1144 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107.
