Marie Consolata Billingsley In Memoriam
In Loving Memory Of

Sr. Marie Billingsley

Sr. Marie Consolata Billingsley, 87, passed peacefully into the arms of her God on Sunday evening, December 18, at St. Gertrude Monastery, Ridgely, Maryland. Sr. Marie Consolata (Eleanor) was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Wardell Billingsley. One of six children, she was a "Kinger" as she attended Christ Our King Elementary School and later graduated from St. Elizabeth High School. Inspired by the example of the Benedictine Sisters, she entered that religious community in June, 1947.

After earning her college degree from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ, she was assigned teaching positions on the elementary school level at St. Mary's in Newark, NJ, St. Elizabeth's and Our lady of Fatima in Wilmington, DE. She was a member of the first faculty of the short-lived Our Lady of Fatima High School.

Sister spent the next 33 years as a math educator at St. Elizabeth High School where she was loved and known for her patience and willingness to stay after school hours to help a struggling student. Her greatest reward was seeing her students succeed in college and life. Patience was never a challenge for her, and she was quoted as saying, "patience comes with the love of teaching."

A gradual and serious hearing loss prompted her to leave the classroom in 1991. Her math skills were utilized as she took on the role of treasurer for the community and spent many years ensuring the financial stability of her sisters.

Her hobbies included crocheting, Suduko, the organ and her favorite, pet-sitting for friends.

In addition to her parents, Sister was pre-deceased by her brother, Joseph, and her sisters, Clementine, Patricia and Mary Elizabeth. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her brother, Michael, her late siblings' spouses, her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, friends and her Benedictine Sisters.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 21, by Rev. Joseph Piekarski, a former student. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the Mass, and interment will take place in the community cemetery. Donations may be made to the Benedictine Sisters' Retirement , 14259 Benedictine Lane, Ridgely, Maryland, 21660.
