Marilyn Kaye Nugent Hendricks Obituary
Marilyn Kaye Nugent Hendricks

AGE: 80 • Kennett Square, PA

Marilyn Kaye Nugent Hendricks passed away in her sleep on Sunday December 22, 2016 in Kennett Square, PA. She was 80 years old. She was preceded in death late last year by her beloved husband of 58 years, R. Michael Hendricks.

She is survived by son R. Matthew Hendricks of Wilmington, DE; grandson Rayman A. Hendricks, II of Prescott, AZ; brother Stephen E. Nugent of San Marcos, CA, sisters Julie N. Craig of Pocatello, ID, Liz Jacob of Salt Lake City, UT and Jana Nugent of Salt Lake City, UT.

Marilyn was born in St. Anthony, Idaho. She graduated with honors from Pocatello High School. Marilyn then attended the University of Idaho graduating Pi Beta Kappa. Marilyn met Mike Hendricks and they became good friends during high school. While in college, Mike courted her; they fell in love, were married in 1959 and relocated to Johnston, SC where Mike started his career and they started a family. Mike and Marilyn relocated to Salt Lake City, UT in 1963 then to Wilmington, DE in 1967 where they built their home and their lives while falling in love with the peace and beauty of the Brandywine Valley.

After relocating to Wilmington, Marilyn graduated with honors from the University of Delaware with a Master's Degree in Linguistics. Marilyn began a life-long love of teaching English as a second language at the Latin American Community Center in Wilmington, DE. She subsequently moved to Delaware Technical and Community College where she taught for over 25 years. Marilyn was always passionate about helping people. Her dedication to her students went beyond the classroom and her home often served as a special place for families fleeing international crisis.

She was an avid reader who wanted to share her love of literature. Therefore, she became a generous supporter of the Wilmington Public Library on Rodney Square in downtown Wilmington. Marilyn had a deep affection of language, studying both Spanish and French. Speaking fluent Italian, one of her favorite trips with Mike abroad was to Italy. Not only did she feel right at home speaking the language, she also enjoyed the generous culture. She planted a fabulous flower garden each year and, in retirement, could be found in the garden for much of the day in season. She taught yoga, was a collector of art and a lover of ballet and opera. She was a tremendous supporter of the arts in general and of Wilmington charities in particular.

Mike and Marilyn relocated to Kendal in Kennett Square, PA last year. Marilyn had a reputation for generosity and kindness and she loved her family dearly; especially her grandson Ray. Her loving presence is missed by friends and family.

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday February 4, 2017 at 3:30 pm at the Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 3:00 to 3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Marilyn's name to the Wilmington Public Library in Wilmington, DE.
