Martha McLaughlin

AGE: 85 • Hockessin, Del.

Martha McLaughlin, age 85, of Hockessin, Del. passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin.

Martha was born in Peoria, IL to the late Harvey F. and Helen Dawson McLaughlin, and grew up in Baltimore and New Orleans. A 1949 graduate of the Louise S. McGehee School in New Orleans, she received her BA degree from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA in 1953. She began her career as an Assistant Physiologist in the Physiology Department at the Harvard School of Public Health, and then worked for DuPont Haskell Laboratory in Delaware until her retirement in 1985, first as a Physiologist in the Environmental Sciences Group and then as a Safety and Health Coordinator.

Martha was a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church and the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. She served her condominium complex in various capacities and was an officer of the Wilmington Trail Club. In 1986, she completed a many-year project of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail. In addition to hiking, Martha loved many other sports, especially white water canoeing and kayaking, bicycling, swimming and cross-country skiing. She even tried her hand at dog sledding. An avid traveler, she visited every continent except Antarctica, and was a lifelong learner, both in classrooms and through her travels.

Martha is survived by her niece, Lynn McLaughlin of South Hadley, MA; nephew, Robert McLaughlin (Lisa) of St. Louis, MO; great-niece, Laura Hiller (Ben) of Wellesley, MA; great-nephew, Scott McLaughlin of St. Louis, MO and many McLaughlin family cousins.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Sunday, May 1, 2016, at Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE 19707. Interment will be private in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the National Parks Conservation Association and the National Resources Defense Council.
