1922 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Mary Frances Olsen "Fran" Muncaster Obituary
Mary Frances "Fran" Olsen Muncaster

AGE: 94 • Hockessin

Mary Frances "Fran" Olsen Muncaster, age 94, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin, DE.

Fran was born to the late Ralph B. and Elizabeth (English) Olsen on October 13, 1922, in Brooklyn, NY. Shortly after birth, she moved with her family to Nutley, NJ, where she spent her childhood. She graduated from Nutley High School in 1940, and she received a B.S. in Business Administration from Bucknell University in 1944. She married DuPont chemical engineer William Thomas Muncaster in 1946, and they settled in Woodstown, NJ. After living for most of their lives in Woodstown, she and her husband Bill moved to Cokesbury Village in Hockessin, DE, in 2003.

Fran was an active member of the Woodstown United Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the church choir and served a term as a church Elder. She later became a member of the Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, DE.

While living in Woodstown, Fran spent several years substitute teaching, which included positions of long-term substituting in music, typing, and shorthand. She was very active in the community, and she served a term as President of the Woodstown Women's Club. As might be expected of the daughter of a silent-movie organist, Fran also enjoyed playing the piano and the organ. Her playing became proficient enough that she once made an appearance playing the organ on a TV program shown by a Wilmington TV station. She loved to dance, and as a child she had dreamed of becoming a Radio City Music Hall Rockette. Although her father steered her into what he felt was a more stable career direction, she ended up satisfying her urge to dance by holding square dances in her home and by attending annual charity balls. She valued physical activity and exercised regularly in classes at a nearby exercise facility. She also loved swimming, golf, tennis, and downhill skiing. Throughout her life, she was an enthusiastic bridge player and was a member of several bridge clubs.

Later in life, Fran and Bill traveled extensively. A partial list of their destinations would include Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Great Britain, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Austria, Russia, China, Australia, New Zealand, Panama, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Kenya (African safari).

Fran is pre-deceased by her brother Bernard in 1934, and by her husband Bill in 2014, after 68 years of marriage. She is survived by her three children: Tom (Charlottesville, VA), Ralph (Carlsbad, CA), and Richard (Vineland, NJ). She is also survived by six grandchildren (Cyndi, Angel, Will, Joel, Jason, and Justin) and eleven great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE. Burial will be held later the same day at 2:00 p.m. at Rockville Cemetery, 1350 Baltimore Road, Rockville, MD.
