Matthew J. Lynch, (Matty) age 94, of Wilmington, Delaware, formally of Providence, Rhode Island died on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at home.

Matty graduated from LaSalle Academy of Providence, Rhode Island, where he lettered in three sports: baseball, basketball, and football. He received a BS degree in Pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island and became a registered pharmacist.

He joined the United States Navy in 1942 and was assigned to the new destroyer, the USS Conner. He served as a gunner's mate and gun captain in 16 major battles in the Pacific, including Iwo Jima, the Philippines, and Okinawa earning twelve bronze stars.

He began his career as a research pharmacist in 1950 with Abbott Laboratories in Chicago. He worked on a wide spectrum of pharmaceuticals that included sulfa drugs, antihistamines, anesthetics, estrogens, antibiotics, and artificial sweeteners. These led to the development of Erythromycin, Selsun shampoo, Mylanta, Trident gum, and various gel toothpastes. In 1961 he joined Atlas Chemical Industries and moved to Wilmington, Delaware where he worked until 1986. Matty was a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the American Chemical Society, the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, the American Oil Chemists Society, the American Association of Cereal Chemists, and the Institute of Food Technologists. During his career, Matty was granted over 100 US and foreign patents, published numerous scientific papers, and authored several reference textbook chapters. In 1986 he was recognized by the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy as an outstanding alumnus for his scientific achievement.

Matty was a dedicated member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish since 1961, coached grade school and high school basketball and softball teams, and served as a lay minister.

After retirement, he and his wife purchased a house in Avalon, New Jersey, where they enjoyed summers with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Matthew is survived by Genevieve, his beloved "bride" of 66 years, and his four children: Matthew J. Lynch, Jr. (Nancy), Marianne White (Bennett), Paul Lynch, and Kathleen Skibicki (David). In addition, he is survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Friday, July 1, 2016 at 11:00 am, preceded by visitation at 10:00 am at the church. His entombment will be held immediately after the Mass at Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, Delaware. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Outreach, 1000 Shipley Road, Wilmington, DE 19803 or to the Ministry of Caring, 506 North Church Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
