Maxine Robertson Furbush Obituary
Maxine Robertson Furbush

AGE: 97 • West Des Moines, IA

Maxine Robertson Furbush passed away in West Des Moines, IA,on Sunday, October 16, 2016, surrounded by family. Her unassuming goodness and devotion to family and friends graced her 97 ½ years. To her final days she was clear of mind and appreciative of small pleasures - sighting of birds at the feeder, admiring flowers and gardens, visiting Lake Panorama at her son's lake home.

Raised in St. Albans, ME on a dairy farm, with high school years in Portland, ME, Maxine embodied Yankee resourcefulness and thrift. She began her teaching career in Maine after graduating from the University of Maine with a degree in Home Economics in 1940. In 1942 she married Lawrance M. Furbush of North Parsonsfield, ME. She continued to teach after the family moved to Wilmington, DE, and she later earned a Masters in Education at the University of Delaware. Her children and grandchildren cooked, baked, and gardened at her side.

In 1996, Maxine moved to her son's home in Des Moines where Dave's young sons and Maxine enjoyed the benefits of a multi-generational family. She enjoyed volunteering in the Clive schools, and she was a popular volunteer in her daughter's home economics classroom when visiting back in Wilmington.

Her family treasures the forever example of her sweet kindness, cheerful disposition, good humor, and constant love. She was called "Grammie" by many of her children's friends.

Maxine was the devoted and beloved wife of Lawrance until his passing in 1975. She is survived by her three children: Betty Behringer (Al) Wilmington, DE; Ruthie Rice (Alan) Minneapolis, MN; Dave Furbush (Kimberley) Clive, IA.Six grandchildren: Scott Behringer (Susie) Landenberg, PA; Sara Hagerty (Bobby) Newark, DE; Ben Bishop (Sara) Milwaukee, WI; Amanda Martin (Hal) Cleveland, OH; Daniel Furbush (Lauren) Jacksonville, FL; Andy Furbush (Meghan) St. Louis, MO; and two great grandchildren Elaina & Hudson Hagerty.
