AGE: 95 • Wilmington

Melvin H. Koster, age 95, of Wilmington, and formerly of Seaford and Laurel, passed away on November 19, 2016, at Forwood Manor in Wilmington. Born in Laurel, he is the son of the late Henry and Mary Koster.

Melvin was a 1940 graduate of Laurel High School. After graduation, he attended the University of Delaware. In his fourth year of college, he was drafted by the United States Navy and served in active duty for two years. Upon returning home, he went to work for his family business, the Koster Locker Plant. He was soon sent by the company to Ohio State University to study refrigeration. He worked for the family business until it was sold in the 1950's. He was then recruited by the State of Delaware to work as an engineer for the Department of Agriculture, retiring after over 20 years of employment there.

Melvin was one of the founding members of the Pony League, which was started in 1955. He enjoyed coaching Little League and was proud of coaching many all-star players in the community. Melvin was a member of Centenary United Methodist and was a past Sunday school teacher. After his retirement from the State of Delaware, he enjoyed playing golf and spending winters in Fort Myers, Florida, with his beloved wife Marian. He was a member of the Seaford Senior Center, and volunteered for over ten years as a Tax Aide for AARP.

Melvin is survived by his son Drew Koster and his wife Linda ("Lil") of Wilmington, Delaware. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Marian May Koster, his daughter Judy Bradley, and his siblings, Milton Koster and Evelyn Spicer.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2016, at 12:00pm at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West Street Laurel, DE. 19956. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11:00am-12:00pm. Pastor Dean Perdue will officiate. Interment will be private.
