Monroe L. Nute, Jr., 79, of Kennett Square, PA, died Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at his home.
He was the husband of Audrey Stover Nute with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. Born in Chambersburg, PA he was a son of the late Monroe and Rose Evans Nute, Sr. Monroe attended Mercersburg Academy and West Nottingham Academy, Colora, MD. He graduated from Kennett High School in 1946. A life time resident of Kennett Square, Monroe owned and operated Nute Motor Company, a Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge Trucks dealership in Kennett Square for 45 years, retiring in 1984. He was an antique dealer for the past 20 years. Monroe was a long time member and past Sunday school teacher at the Presbyterian Church of Kennett Square, a Thirty-Second Degree Mason, he was a member of the Kennett Lodge #475 F&A.M., past member and President of the Kennett Square Lions Club, served on the Board of Directors of the Union Hill Cemetery, and member of the Kennett Golf and Country Club. In his earlier years he was an active member of the Kennett Fire Co. #1, and coached Little League and Kennett Community Basketball. He enjoyed hunting in Wellsboro, PA, fishing, golf, sports, woodworking and antiques. Monroe played "Taps" on his trumpet, at the age of 12, in the New York World Fair.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Monroe L. Nute, III of Roanoke, VA; 2 daughters, Lynne Nute of Long Beach and Deborah Tavoni of Lincoln University, PA; 2 grandchildren, Rachel Hillworth of Coatesville, PA and Danielle Tavoni of Wilmington, DE; 3 great-grandchildren, Marissa Hillworth, Michael Hillworth and Vincent Porto; a brother, J. Thomas Nute and his wife Joyce of Millsboro, DE; and a sister, Jane Carr of Catonsville, MD.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Monday, September 17, 2007 at the EDWARD L. COLLINS FUNERAL HOME, INC., 86 Pine St. Oxford, PA, where friends and family may call from 10-11 am. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Kennett Square, 211 S. Broad St. Kennett Square, PA 19348; or the American Cancer Society, 1615 West Chester Pike, Suite 102, West Chester, PA 19382.
