Murray Benjamin Hines Obituary
Murray Benjamin Hines

AGE: 56 • Newark

Murray Benjamin Hines, son of Roger Arnold Hines and Joanne (Healy) Hines, passed away on November 15, 2015. After a courageous year-long battle with cancer he passed away at home with his wife Susan by his side.

Murray was married to his best friend, Susan Prottas Hines for 23 years. To be with them was to enjoy their mutual good humor, fun, understanding and appreciation of each other and those around them. They vowed on their wedding day to love each other forever. Their marriage is the fulfillment of that commitment and a continued inspiration.

Murray is survived on the Hines side by three sisters, Amy Hines Forshay (Dave), D. Elise Kay (Larry), and Rebecca Hines (Hugh Byrne), as well as nephews Justin Kay (Allison), Ethan Kay and niece Christina Kay.

Murray is survived on the Prottas side by his in-laws Stuart Prottas (deceased) and Janet Levy Prottas, his brother-in-law Robert Prottas and nephews Alex Prottas and Christopher Prottas. He also leaves behind his cherished cats Sushi and Sophie.

Murray was a kind and gentle person with a wry sense of humor. Growing up he was the quiet one among his talkative family. When Rebecca was born seven years after Murray, he became the best of older brothers, enjoying his baby sister to the fullest, making life more fun for her and everyone. 'The Moof' was the treasured name he gave her which rings happily in our memories to this day.

From a young age his love of music and electronics was apparent in everything he did; from wiring a new home so all the music was controlled from one central location to building his own speakers. He was an excellent dancer, winning a dance competition and a lifelong lover of all genres of music. In high school he excelled as a varsity tennis and soccer player.

He graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in economics and statistics and pursued graduate work toward completing a master's degree.

Murray actively enjoyed taking care of his home, cooking, music, gardening and keeping up on ever-changing technologies. He was a confirmed romantic who enjoyed shopping with and for Susan. He especially loved to hide away little gifts just for "whatever" to surprise her unexpectedly. He was the envy of many women who wish their husbands enjoyed shopping.

His sweet personality will be missed and appreciated always. We are thankful that he has been and will always be a loved part or our thoughts and family. What more can one say about the precious son, husband, brother and uncle but "Murray, we are thankful that you have brightened our lives."

A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 3:00 pm at the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington, DE; 730 Halstead Road, Sharpley, Wilmington, DE. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Murray's memory be made to: Shatterproof (http://www.shatterproof.org), Jimmy Fund (http://www.jimmyfundgiving.org), or National Alliance on Mental Illness (http://www.nami.org/).
