Nancy A. Graves Obituary
Nancy A. Graves

AGE: 91 • Wilmington

On Wednesday January 18, 2017, the state of Delaware lost its biggest cheerleader, Nancy Aileen Graves of Wilmington at the age of 91. Nancy frequently spoke of her love for her great state and how special it was to live here.

She was born in Wilmington, the eldest of two daughters of Esther and Edward Graves. She attended Ursuline Academy high school until her father's employment with DuPont moved her family to Louisville, KY, where she graduated from Sacred Heart Academy.

While in Louisville, she and her sister opened Young Years, a retail children's clothing store. In 1950 she moved back to Wilmington with her parents and worked for Delaware Trust Company and Strawbridge/Macy's until retirement.

Through the years, Nancy volunteered at the Delaware Art Museum, LPGA at DuPont Country Club and Music In The Park. She also greatly enjoyed attending adult education classes at the University of Delaware Lifelong Learning Institute where she was quite proud of usually being the oldest one in class.

Nancy moved into the Brandywine Hundred apartments when it opened in 1967. Throughout her 50 years of residence she made wonderful memories and lifelong friends. She never desired to live anywhere else. Her family is forever grateful to the many people who offered their friendship and who helped to watch over her as her health began to decline in recent weeks.

Nancy's family would like to offer their sincere appreciation to the staff at Wilmington Hospital who took such excellent care of her in her final days.

Nancy is preceded in death by her parents Esther and Edward Graves and brother-in-law Stuart W. Allen Jr. She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Graves Allen of Louisville, nephews David Allen(Patti) and Stuart W. Allen III (Patti) and many great and great great nieces and nephews.

A gathering to celebrate her life will be held at the Brandywine Hundred Apartments, 400 Foulk Road, in the Community Room on Saturday February 25, 2017 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.

Memorial contributions in Nancy's memory may be made to the Delaware Art Museum, 2301 Kentmere Pkwy, Wilmington DE 19806.
