AGE: 73 • Wilmington

Norman James Batty (Jim), age 73, of Wilmington passed away on August 28, 2016. Born on October 26, 1942, he was the son of the late Norman and Ruth (Warren) Batty.

Jim graduated from PS DuPont in 1960 and Certification from American Institute of Banking. He was presently, Treasurer of The Travel Company for past 24 years, and previously in Finance and Banking for 32 years. He served in the Army National Guard from 1963 - 1969, as a Sharp Shooter and part of that time he served as Attache to the Colonel.

Jim was a member of the Kirkwood Rotary Club, which soon became Christiana Rotary Club, until the middle 90s. He also served as Treasurer of St. Elizabeth Athletic Association from 1977-2012.

Jim along with his wife, Sheila, are Chartered members of PFLAG, (Parents and Friends of Lesbian and Gays) Wilmington/North Delaware Chapter. Jim was passionate about Equality and fought strong for the LGBTQ community. He spent the past 24 years supporting legislation for Equal Rights for all. He truly believed that we all contribute positively to the world. One of his proudest moments was being ordained for the sole purpose of marrying his son to Henry Daniel Avila in November 2012.

We would like to thank all the nurses and doctors at Christiana Care MICU unit, We would also like to thank his specialist doctors that have help him through many medical conditions during his life: Dr A Neal DeSanctis, Dr George Davis, Dr William J Schickler, Dr Steven A Terranova and Dr R Bradley Slease.

Left to cherish many wonderful and amazing times together with their Unc Batt: wife, Sheila N. Batty; son, Norman J. Batty III (Jim) husband (Daniel); sisters, Karen Boettger and Bill, Lorraine Jones and Rich, Sandy Brady and Seth; brother-in-law, Fran Newell and Paul Taylor and Janet, nieces and nephews, Paul Taylor and Gladys, Chuck Taylor and Claudia, Lou Ruggerio and Idella, Frank Ruggerio and Scott Davis; Great nieces and great nephews, Theresa Ruggerio, Louie Ruggerio and Jackie; His loved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephew from California, Texas, and Pennsylvania. Unc Batt will be especially missed at 50th and Sand. There will always be a space for him by the sides of his nieces, nephews, greats and great greats: Gina Ruggerio Davis and Jack, Their family, Amber Curry, Kevin Curry their son Aiden; Jamie and Lydell Dorsey; Frankie Ruggerio and Leah West, Suzy and Rock Arms; Their children, Kelly and James Malinowski and their children, Aubrey and Nicholas; Tommy and Christie Arms and their children Tommy and Olivia and Chris and Bonnie Dryden. Unc Batt was such an integral part of our favorite summer vacation spot. He will always be there with us in spirit.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 2 from 10 AM to 12 Noon at St. Elizabeth Church, Cedar and Clayton Sts., Wilmington, DE 19805, where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 12 Noon. Interment will be private. To celebrate Jim's vibrant personality, the family would love for everyone to wear bright vibrant colors.
