Dr. Okan Ekiner Obituary
Dr. Okan Ekiner

AGE: 78 • Wilmington

Dr. Okan Max Ekiner, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at Sunrise Senior Living. He was 78 years old.

Originally from Bursa, Turkey, Okan came to the United States to attend graduate school at Northwestern University, where he received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 1965. Prior to that, he studied at Robert College in Istanbul (now Bogazici University), also for chemical engineering.

Okan had a long and accomplished career as a scientist. He began his professional life with DuPont, where he worked for 36 years as a chemical engineer, and later transitioned to Air Liquide for an additional nine years. He received the distinguished title of Senior Research Fellow at both companies and also holds numerous patents to his credit from his study of gas separation membranes.

Okan was married for 34 years to Ozden Ekiner (who lovingly devoted herself to his recent care), also originally of Bursa, Turkey. Together they had a son, Kaan, of Wilmington. Okan also had a daughter from his first marriage, Lisa Ekiner Mazinas, of Ardmore, PA.

Okan liked being outdoors and was an avid fisherman and athlete in his younger years. He also enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, watching the Phillies and spending time with his family.

Besides his wife, son and daughter, Okan is also survived by a daughter-in-law Andrea Yuzuk, a son-in-law, Joe Mazinas, Jr.; 2 grandchildren, Julia and Joey Mazinas; 3 brothers, Erkan, Aydn and Hakk Ekiner and 1 sister, Hale Sivrioglu, who reside in Turkey.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 18, at 12 noon, at McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, where friends may call after 11:30am. Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made in Okan's name to the Sunday Breakfast Mission, 110 N. Poplar St. Wilmington, DE 19801.
