Paul J. Socorso Sr. Obituary
Paul J. Socorso, Sr.

AGE: 84 • Wilmington

Paul J. Socorso, Sr., 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 23, 2016.

A lifelong resident of Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late Francisco and Philomena (Lombardi) Socorso. Paul ("Paulie") and his twin sister, Marie were the youngest of fourteen siblings. He proudly served his country as PFC in the United States Army and fought in the Korean War. After his military service, Paul apprenticed as a painter and wallpaper hanger under his brother, Dominic. In the late 1960s, he began working on his own and quickly became the in demand craftsman for wall covering in New Castle County. He was indeed an artisan, and his work came to be featured in many fine homes and businesses in Wilmington, the Brandywine Valley and beyond. In the early 1980s, he was commissioned to cover the walls in two rooms of the Pre-Raphaelite wing of the Delaware Art Museum. Paul retired from wall covering in the early 2000s, but continued helping long time special customers, friends and neighbors.

Over the years, Paul was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed his family and friends, the Wilmington newspaper, bowling, televised sports for the region's professional teams, movies (especially Hitchcock), was a season ticket holder for many years for the U of D football season, enjoyed shuffleboard later in life, and was always happy to lend a hand to help friends and neighbors.

Along with his parents, he was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of 32 years, Elizabeth ("Liz") Brinn Socorso, who died in 1986, as well as siblings, Ann, Anthony ("Tony"), Dominic ("Tabby"), Charles ("Cuppy"), Michael ("Scrappy"), Herbert ("Herbie"), Vito ("Boots"), Lucy, Louis ("Louie") and Marie.

Paul is survived by two sons, Paul Jr. and daughter-in-law, Bonnie of Downingtown, PA, and Jeffrey of Rehoboth Beach, DE, as well as two grandchildren, Rebecca of Lancaster, PA and Morgan of Downingtown, PA. He is also survived by siblings, Edward ("Shy") of New Castle, DE, and twin sisters, Jeannette Hudson of Wilmington, DE and Constance ("Connie") Conlin of Avondale, PA, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and countless friends.

Visitation will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Wednesday, October 26 from 11:00AM-1:00PM. A Service of Christian Burial will immediately follow. Interment with military honors will be in All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Paul may be made to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, Attn: Contributions, One Intrepid Square, W. 46th St. & 12th Ave., New York, NY 10036 (www.fallenheroesfund.org), or think of Paul while beautifying your home, or shaking the hand of a stranger or someone who has served you well.
