AGE: 77 • Greenwood, DE

Paul Roland Garey, age 77, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, in his home. He was the son of the late Percy R. and Erma Shaffer Garey. He was born in Denton, Maryland and later the family moved to Felton, Delaware after purchasing a farm.

Paul was a long time member of the Church of the Brethren in Farmington, Delaware. His life was filled with many varied interests and hobbies, including but not limited to coon hunting, racing homing pigeons, raising and selling goats, swapping and trading, and building many unique and time-saving tools and equipment.

Paul's first real love however would be raising and training young Standardbred race horses with his brother, Donnie. His love for horses came at a young age, when he worked with his father, Percy R., at Harrington and other tracks on the east coast. While still a young teenager, he traveled on the grand circuit taking care of the world champion double-gaited Steamin' Demon.

Garey's Cart and Harness was his first family owned business which was family created with his wife and two sons, John and Jeff. The family restored antique horse drawn carriages. Many of which were showcased in the Nutter Marvel Collection in Georgetown, Delaware.

He is survived by his wife, Helen T. Garey, and his two sons, John R. Garey and wife, Carrie Draper Garey, of Dover and Jeff P. Garey of Greenwood and his companion, Denise R. Jefferson, of Bridgeville, his grandchildren, Meagan A. Garey of Milford, Jordan P. Garey of Greenwood, Zachary A. Garey of Greenwood, and Wyeth L. R. Garey of Dover, step-granddaughter, Reneta Green Street, and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters Priscilla G. Morris and Juanita G. Melling, and six brothers, Robert F. Garey, Kenneth E. Garey, Larry R. Garey, Gerald P. Garey, and William R. Garey.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Wills Eye Institute of Philadelphia, 840 Walnut Street Philadelphia, PA 19107 or the , PO Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21803.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 11:00 am at Parsell Funeral Home, 202 South Laws Street, Bridgeville, Delaware 19933, preceded by visitation at 10:00 am. Friends and Family may also attend visitation on Friday, July 1, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. His internment will be immediately following the funeral services at St. Johnstown Cemetery on Route 16, Greenwood, Delaware.
