AGE: 93 • Smyrna

Pia Maria Cariello, age 93, of Smyrna, DE, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2015 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE. Mrs. Cariello was born August 1, 1922 in Capua, Italy, the daughter of the late Antonio and Ermelinda Caimano. Pia received a dual degree in French and Elementary Education during WWII in Italy while war was raging all around. She worked as a School Teacher in Italy before her marriage in 1950. Pia was a member of the St. Polycarp of Smyrna Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality and enjoyed reading, listening to opera, cooking, knitting, crocheting and her family. She was proud to support all five of her children in their academic pursuits thru college as a role model, after the death of her husband.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Angelo in 1970; her daughter, Grace; her brothers, Gabriel, Damiano and Armando; and her sisters, Eutilia and Eleanora. She is survived by her sons, Vincent and his wife Linda of Bear, DE, Anthony and his wife Betsy of Scottsdale, AZ and Angelo of Smyrna, DE; daughters, Elizabeth Cariello of New Castle, DE and Rose Marie Vinciguerra and her husband Stephen of East New Market, MD; 8 grandchildren, Amanda and her husband Garret, Christine, Phillip, Brian and his wife Sarah, Jason, Kevin, Amy and Michael; and 2 great grandchildren, Gabriel and Maddalena.

A viewing will be held from 5 to 8pm on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main Street in Smyrna. Mass of Catholic Burial will begin at 11am on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at St. Polycarp Roman Catholic Church, located at 135 Ransom Lane in Smyrna. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to , 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, whom she was a proud supporter of.
