AGE: 93 • Norfolk, VA

1924-2017

Richard Baker French, 93, of John Knox Towers in Norfolk, Virginia, died at Harbor's Edge Nursing Home in Norfolk on July 12, 2017.

Mr. French was the son of the late Helen (Baker) and Leslie French of Stoneham Massachusetts. He graduated from Stoneham High School in 1942.

After serving his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, he earned his BS and ME degrees from Boston University School of Education.

He was a Speech Pathologist, State Supervisor of Programs for the Handicapped for Delaware State Department of Public Instruction, and Supervisor of Special Education for the Colonial School District in New Castle, Delaware. He retired in 1980 and moved to Norfolk, Virginia.

He had been associated with the Little Theatre of Norfolk since 1988 where he served as President and member of the Board of Directors. Though he never performed onstage, he wore many other hats to assure that the "Show Must Go On."

He is survived by a niece, Patricia L. (Harold) Odiorne of Southwick, Massachusetts and a nephew, Richard J. (Barbara) Hunt of Cincinnati, Ohio. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Gertrude Hunt and William, and Leslie (Chuck) French.

The family would like to thank the staffs at Harbor's Edge, Norfolk General Hospital, DePaul Medical Center and the many EMTs and ambulance crews who lovingly cared for Dick over the past few months.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the Little Theatre of Norfolk, 801 Claremont St. in Norfolk. Donations in his name may be made to The Little Theatre of Norfolk or at www.ltnonline.org/donate.
