Richard L. "Dick" Hodgson

AGE: 84 • Wilmington

Richard L. Hodgson "Dick", 84 of Wilmington passed away on October 11, 2016 in Punta Gorda, Florida.

Dick was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Virginia (Fitzpatrick) and Laurence Hodgson. He moved around the country with his family during the Great Depression before graduating from Washington & Lee High School in Virginia. He went on to serve his country in the Army during the Korean War after high school. After serving his country, he furthered his education by earning degrees from Wesley College and East Carolina University and began working on his Master's Degree at West Chester University.

Dick pursued a teaching career beginning at Krebs Elementary School in Newport, DE before going on to teach at The Tatnall School for many years. While at Tatnall, he taught History as well as coached Cross Country and Track. It was at Tatnall that he was able to share his love of flying airplanes with many students by starting the Flying Club. He helped several students earn their private pilot's license; he even landed an airplane on the main lawn of Tatnall's campus at the disbelief of many. During this time he also taught flying at Summit Airpark. As an instructor, he was distinguished by being named Flight Instructor of the Year in 1973.

Dick decided to pursue his love of flying as a career. After leaving Tatnall, he began working for Summit Airlines which was a cargo airline based out of Philadelphia. During his 10+ years at Summit, he rose to the title of Chief Pilot. After Summit Airlines, Dick went to work at Flight Safety at Wilmington Airport. While there he taught and helped re-certify corporate pilots for more than 10 years. He was also named head of the duPont Company's flight education program while at Flight Safety.

Dick continued to be an avid pilot into his 70's. He loved golf and traveled extensively with his wife upon their retirements. He also enjoyed watching his grandson compete in various sporting activities.

Dick touched many people's lives and will be missed my many. He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Sherri (Skinner) Hodgson whom he met flying; his son Mark and his wife, Kristin of Wilmington and his grandson, Colin. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, John, Larry, Virginia and Helen.

Funeral services will be held at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 525 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at 10 AM, where friends are invited to visit after 9 AM. Private burial will be held in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to AI duPont Children's Hospital, 1600 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803.
