Richard Leon Vanderloo Obituary
Richard Leon Vanderloo

AGE: 80 • Wilmington, Del.

Richard Leon (Dick) Vanderloo passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 12, at home, surrounded by family.

Born in Trenton, NJ, in 1936, and raised in Wilmington, DE, Dick was a graduate of Archmere Academy and LaSalle College.

For 30 years, Dick taught social studies for the Red Clay Consolidated School District, at Oak Grove Junior High and Stanton Middle School. Additionally, he worked for the past 41 years at the Friendly Gift Shop in Branmar Plaza.

Dick was a devout Catholic and longtime active parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, where he was a founding participant in IHM's Perpetual Adoration, where the Lord was in good company every Friday night 11 p.m.-midnight.

His greatest joys included spending time with his family, particularly his five grandchildren. He also enjoyed vacationing with his family each year in Ocean City, NJ, where he summered as a youth. He never missed a chance to enjoy a few of Sweeney's donuts and the chocolate triangle cake! But, perhaps his favorite activity was working side-by-side with four generations of his family at the Friendly Gift Shop. His fellow employees were his extended family. His time spent with both his co-workers and the customers brought him great joy. He was an avid sports fan, following Philadelphia's Phillies, Eagles, and Sixers, and college basketball.

Dick was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen, and daughter, Susan. He is survived by his brother Robert and wife Evelyn of Rehoboth, DE; his sister Jeanne and husband Louis Olivere of Rehoboth, DE; his son Christopher and wife Lydia of New York, NY; his son Jon and wife Tracey, of Wilmington, DE; and grandchildren Julia, Abigail, Niels, Caroline, and Iris. A beloved patriarch, Dick was renown for his keen interest in the details of his loved ones' lives and his loving support of their many endeavors.

Viewing and Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, April 19, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church (4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE). Viewing will begin at 10 a.m., followed by Mass at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Stockley Center (26351 Patriots Way, Georgetown, DE 19947), in honor of the loving care given to his daughter Susan.
