Richard M. Tunis Obituary
Richard M. Tunis

AGE: 95 • Formerly of Wilmington

Richard M. Tunis, 95, formerly of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.

Richard was born in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Richard and Clara (Teates) Tunis. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the beginning of WWII and served in the 45th Infantry Division throughout Europe and North Africa, receiving two purple hearts during his time of service. Upon his discharge from the Army, he became a teacher at the famed Arthur Murray Dance School and later became a certified typewriter repairman. Richard started working for Royal Typewriter in Wilmington where he met his future wife, Verna Mae McGuinness. They were married in 1952 and had 39 wonderful years together until her death in 1991.

Richard was a fun-loving man who had a positive outlook on life, knew no strangers and loved meeting new people. Other than spending time with his family, building models of antique cars and watching Philadelphia sports teams were his favorite past times. Richard was a man of great faith and a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Elkton, MD, and truly loved his church family.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Verna Mae (McGuinness) Tunis; his sisters, Dorothy Van Dyke, Patricia Tunis, Phillipa Gardiner; and his nephew, Philip Gardiner.

Survivors include his daughter, Sharon (Tunis) Weaver; son-in-law, Mark Weaver; granddaughter, Amanda Darling and husband, Mark; his niece, Patricia (Gardiner) Hill; nephews, Richard Gardiner, and Matthew Gardiner and their spouses.

Richard's family would like to give special thanks to everyone at Ware Presbyterian Village for the love and care given to him during his 18 months with them. Their devotion and kindness will never be forgotten.

Visitation will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE, 19720, followed by a funeral service at 11:00am with interment immediately afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Richard's memory be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, 595 Lewisville Road, Elkton, MD, 21921 or to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE, 19801.
